Role of Computers in Architectural Design

The basic tools that architects use to facilitate their drawing in the past may not be quite the same as today. This is due to the presence of modern electronic equipment that helps them to perfect their job in the shortest possible time. Hence, aside from the traditional tools that architects utilise, they now adapt the use of computers and software applications to achieve a better result.

These days, the new mechanics of the drafting task are hugely automated and accelerated through the use of CAD or computer aided design systems. CAD is basically used for the production of technical drawings, which are categorised into two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D). The 2D systems have generally replaced the paper drawing discipline. Hence, it is down to the technical skill of the user to produce the drawing. These types are used to create plans for huge projects, including buildings and aircraft.

On the other hand, 3D systems allow individual parts to be assembled together to represent the final product. For instance, buildings, aircrafts, ships, and cars are modelled, assembled, and checked in 3D before technical drawings are released for manufacture. Therefore, instead of drawing their blueprints, architects can use these methods to save time. Likewise, these will allow them to view any structure prior to its construction.

Another important requirement for modern drafting is the use of contemporary tools such as ink-jet printers, laser printers, and photocopiers. However, while coloured printing is getting more popular, aside from being inexpensive, architect's drawings are still likely to remain in black and white or greyscale form.
